Johnson/Option Haters - You are forgiven

At some point in the next 15 years a young innovative coach will be hired at a P5 program who will use the flex bone principals but will market it in a way where 4 stars are drawn to it and he’ll win big, Johnson was his own worst enemy as he never fought the BS rhetoric and he never tweaked his system when it was obvious that it was getting blown up. He had the right idea with adding wrinkles with Vad from the gun but he never followed thru. I love the guy but he caused the whimper of his retirement by not adding wrinkles which would have helped his recruiting.
He had to scrap the diamond because Vad couldn’t run it any better than he ran the base offense. And everyone else was better running the base than the diamond. CPJ offenses were like any other good schemes. Dependent upon the quality of the QB.

Since this year only lol.

Our two wins this year have our lowest passing yards of five games, and our highest single rusher of five games. Passing is therefore counterproductive.

Discuss.

LOL. So you prefer a mediocre Tech team that never wins a big bowl or championship and always always always loses to uga. Maybe you are the real mutt fan???
And never had a losing season, was hampered by 15-20 players immediately flunking out upon his arrival?

What is Chan's winning % given his time vs Johnson's winning %?

Johnson ööööed up royally by losing to UGAg in 2009 with the most talented team GT has had since 1990. One of the few times we went into the game favored in decades. That is on talent Chan and Tenuta built. Talent Johnson threw aööööingway with a ööööty DC who wasted the talent we had on defense. Tenuta would have ööööing smothered UGAg with that talent. Renfree or Nesbitt starts. Demaryus at WR. Collin Peek stays at TE instead of bolting for Alabama. Dwyer at TB. Cox at FB.

You're a ööööing idiot.

That game was a heartbreaker, no doubt. But if you’re going to blast him for losing when he was favored, then you have to praise him for winning when he was not. And we have to face the facts, every year Chan won a game he should’ve lost, and he lost a game he should’ve won.

Chan was given numerous years to get over the hump of solid mediocrity. He never did and the fans grew restless. It is quite possible, however, that he finally had the pieces in place to do it, but he did lose to Wake with the greatest WR in the history of the game.

That game hurt for sure but it came out years later that Thanksgiving week 2009 was when all the NCAA stuff went down over the DT stuff and Radakovich, CPJ, and the players were having to talk to the compliance people. So it’s easy to say that our guys heads were not where they should have been heading into that game and it showed.

2006 squad had better talent than 2009. By a good margin.

Absolutely true. QB is the key. But the point stands that it was on him to find QB’s to run everything. Instead he secluded himself as a one trick coach. What I’ll never understand is why he recruited and signed 10-12 Abacks and another 10-12 WR’s yet only 3-4 QB’s. He should have recruited way more QB’s to see who could run it all. It’s like now. We have 16 WR’s and 9 TE’s listed on the roster. If any position should be over signed it’s OLine. We should be signing waaaaaay more OLinemen instead of a bunch of small WR’s who never see the field. Johnson should have had way more QB‘s at his disposal instead of being stuck with nothing after Thomas left. If I were in charge GT would oversign OLinemen like crazy and hope we find 5-8 solid guys out of 25. Right now we are going on 5 plus years of having bad OLines and that is why we are losing. Our QB’s are getting mauled while we have dozens of WR’s and DB‘s standing on the sidelines. Those guys are a dime a dozen. Football is all about the lines and QB.

I think it’s very hard to recruit a good option QB in this day and age of high school athlete. You have to find someone who is unselfish, willing to take a hit, able to make fast decisions, and talented enough to play at the collegiate level, while sacrificing a future NFL career they saw for themselves at the same time. The intangibles are hard to see before they arrive on campus and start practicing/playing. I think Marshall checked a lot of boxes and left some of the intangibles to be desired. Vad Lee is another example of someone who checked a lot of tangible boxes but not the intangibles. It was one of the more satisfying aspects of 2014 in my opinion.

I think every coach would like to oversign QB's. Chan should have signed more, CPJ shoud have signed more, and Geoff should have signed more. It is easy to say; the hard part is recruiting QB's that want to come to GT and are also worth signing. It doesn't do the team any good to have 4 QB's on the roster if 3 of them will never make the field. It is better to sign a good athlete at another position and convert them to QB if you have to.

You do realize that comparing any coaches record against UGA is all but irrelevant, right? By the time Johnson retired GT could not compete with UGA, Clemson or ND. The ocean sized gap in talent was not being neutralized by running the option.

UGA was peaking during the CMR era while CCG was HC. Johnson lost to 3 of the worst UGA teams since Goff was the HC. So yes, Johnson beat UGA, but so did UCF, UK, South Carolina, etc.

UGA nor Clemson are at all measuring sticks at this point. They are 2 of the 4 truly elite programs in CFB since the CFP era began. Alabama and Ohio State are the other 2. Then the next group is ND and Oklahoma as far as consistency goes. That said, both OU and ND are in transition with new staffs.

Heartbreaker hell. We were pissed off and a lot of fans had had enough of Johnson. We were pathetic. We were clearly superior. We had finally gotten to an equal footing with UGAg personnel wise. It was just a few seasons later, we had to endure watching our players getting body slammed midfield by UGA players and we once again became physically inferior to them.

A lot of fans had had enough of Johnson after the 2009 Uga game? I mean, it sucked, yea. It was a game they absolutely should have won, but that's how rivalry games are a lot of times. I can see Tech fans wanting to give up on Johnson after they blew the lead a few years later in Atlanta, when Godhigh had a big game and they were ahead by like 20. But after 2009? Please

A lot of fans had had enough of Johnson after an 11 win season and ACC championship?

Wut

It sucked but we were throwing oranges on the field in Tampa a week later

Y'all apparently weren't in my section. Favored. Superior. Got our asses handed to us. Didn't/couldn't/wouldn't adjust to UGAg using the trickery if just handing the ball off and running up the middle while we layed back because they were supposedly going to go through the air. Nothing like having UGAg fans that season declaring themselves ACC champs as we celebrated winning our öööö conference

I don't think this thread was needed here, but it'd do well as a letter to our boosters. They wouldn't give the time of day to the future hall-of-famer but gave CGC everything he asked for (so I'm told anyway).

If all that's true, I hope they know the last 4 years are their fault, and the prior 11 could have been even better. I want them to know this because I don't want a repeat now. I want them to take their finger off the scales, let Cabrera and the new AD fix this, and donate without strings attached.

One hopes that paying a combined $14M in buyout to get CGC here and then to leave was a painful lesson in that which won't be forgotten.
