Media reporting

Well, Paul Johnson treated the media like öööö. So they treated him like öööö in return. Not really that complicated.

Dude was an unnecessarily ornery asshole.

I think this is the simplest explanation. CPJ was cocky and aloof. So journalists didn’t like giving him his due. Collins is charismatic. So he generally gets good press. Just sucks that he can’t do anything else a coach needs to be able to do.

I don't know where this "Collins is charismatic" thing comes from. I don't find a single thing about him that would even begin to draw me to him as a friend or admirer. I thought CPJ was funny as hell, and he never shied away from telling it like it was, no matter whom he was talking to. And he sure always seemed to me to have a demonstrable love for his players. Maybe I share more personality traits with CPJ than with Collins, but I would a helluva lot more prefer to spend an afternoon with CPJ than 5 minutes with Collins.

The author of the original article posted wasn't old enough to have a beef with CPJ. Hell, here's the bio of this kid. Pure Gold. A veritable Grantland Rice in the making.

"I have been in the sports writing industry for close to four years now, getting my start at TheAOSN.com and INSCMagazine, where I was actually able to obtain media credentials to Georgia Tech football home games this past season. I'm currently working on my Associates degree at Georgia Highlands College, where I was the Sports Editor for three semesters, but this past semester made the jump to Editor-In-Chief. At the most recent Georgia College Press Association Awards, where I was pitted against every public college in the state of Georgia, I won 2nd and 3rd place for best sports story and 1st place in best community coverage in the sports category. On the broadcasting side, I convinced my advisor to begin a sports podcast for the school last fall, which I co-hosted that semester, but took on the solo host role this past semester and was able to place 2nd at the Southern Regional Press Institute for best podcast episode a month ago. I also do play-by-play for the Men's and Women's basketball team."

2nd that. He's the Jim Jones of College Football and half this board is on his koolaid. When Collins wins 80 gms period as a HC, then there's a conversation to be had. Until then, "Choppa, sick balls"

I liked CPJs personality. But he only got away with it because he won. If you flipped their records I’d probably like CGC too.

This thread isn't making an argument of Collins vs CPJ. All the old CPJ lovers keep doing that. Just because Collins isn't better doesn't mean that where we were headed with CPJ was acceptable. People seem to not understand this or have the mental capacity to differentiate the two.
Most CPJ lovers respect what he accomplished here as the only full bore STEM school playing D-1 football, while agreeing it was time to go. They also do not want the TO back. A great many long term supporters of the program are much more concerned about whether we are essentially out of big time cFB in a few years, than they are about whether we win 5 or not this year.
As for the near term future of the program, even a cursory glance at the offer lists of the recruiting pool we are playing in, speaks volumes. UF/Clemson >> Liberty/Bowling Green. There was a time when the: "Hey kid, make a 40 year decision instead of a 4 year one", got more traction than the almost zero amount it gets now.

Collins is a phony. He spends his time trying to act a certain way, spinning a false narrative, thinking about his image and creating specific sound bites. He’s a fake-it til-you-make-it type. Nothing about him is authentic. In a way, that is why he resonates with today’s youth, because much of their focus is on building a perception/brand of themselves on social media.

PJ was authentic to who he was. Old school, smart ass, moody, confident. Some people hated it, others liked it. But he didn’t try to be anything beyond what he was.

Lol… this is so far from the truth. Ima go out on a limb and say you’ve never been around either. CGC is the same person he was in 2006. He understands what GT is and can be but a lot of folks stand in his way. He is the same guy that players would go in his office to relax and discuss not only football but what’s going on in their personal lives. That’s why recruits and parents still have great things to say.

Old school is not a compliment. Old school kept him from connecting with recruits and adapting as the landscape of CFB changed. Being old school also kept him from adapting his offense as rules changed.

Confident doesn’t quit either. It’s still pretty crazy many don’t understand that we were truly in a rebuild and no matter the coach, the results would’ve been similar

Lol and Old School is going to get him to the Hall of Fame

Being best friends with your players gets you 3 wins, 3 wins, 3 wins and 3 wins and fired

That’s fine. Congrats to him, but what any of that have to do with how the program was left in?

How many players have you heard come out and say that Collins was trying to be their BF? That’s just more made up stuff from curmudgeon GT fans

Paul actually did the program a solid when he didn’t saddle the program with a large buyout.

The program will be in much worse shape on Dec 1, 2022

Well said.
The current occupant of our HC position simply is not authentic.
the number of things he's called elite (especially himself) makes one wonder what he is trying to accomplish.
His only long lasting legacy may be telling GT fans "they don't want to see the progress"

It comes down to whether you believe in a fake person. Collins is a fraud. However; he identifies with a certain group of people. If you are part of the that group, people tend to just accept and believe. It is nothing more than simple politics. Let's face it. CPJ was not one to stroke the media's c*ck.. He was a person the got into the face of players, when they did something wrong. These are ideals, of older people. The younger and more left folks have a different set of ideals. So, Collins meets those ideals. Whether he wins or not. I am old school. I rather have a person be upfront with me, rather than smile, nod and talk behind my back. Collins plays the media game, much better than CPJ ever did. Collins says all the words, that make certain people happy. Eventually, it will work out.. However; it will be way too late, once that happens.

Couldn’t be any worse than what he left especially in the trenches.

You understand why no one want to be a sacrificial lamb for this job.

If you believe there is a coach out there that would have this program sitting at more than 13-14 wins in 3 yrs then you are more delusional than i initially thought.

You're forgetting what era we are living in. If it offends someone, hurt someone's feelings, or remotely makes them uncomfortable, it's frowned upon behavior.

Collins, and I don't know the guy, but by all appearances, winning or not, is a bonafide cockswaddler. He wants to be liked rather than respected. It's the same thing as a dad who wants to be his kid's friend rather than his mentor and leader.

Works great when you're trying to create new dramatic reality tv show stars. Not so great when you're trying to make a football team...or a man.
