ND Postgame Thread

Little Joe as a RS Freshman:
108/188 (57.4%) 1342 yds 7.1 Y/A 7 TD 14 INT
95 rush 248 yds 3 TDs

Sims as a TRUE Freshman with a COVID fall camp:
83/150 (53%) 1196 yds 8 Y/A 8 TD 10 INT
69 rush 245 yds 4 TDs

keep in mind that 96 OL was also worlds better than this iteration.

Don't let facts get in the way. Last week it was the teams undisciplined look at all the.penalties.......to Sims has low football IQ .

Our problems on this team, in JJacket order with 10 being where we need them.
1) DL - 2/10
2) OL -3/10
3) LB - 3/10
4) TE - 3/10
5) DB - 4/10 (needs better DL & LB play)
6) WR - 5/10
7) QB - 6/10
8) RB - 8/10

Punting is a 7/10.

PK is a 0/10. If any kicker wanted a scholarship at GT, get a preferred walk on, prove yourself as a freshman, and you get free school.

Kicker on kickoffs is a 7/10

Kick returns are a 4/10, if your name isn't Gibbs, fair catch the damn thing.

Punt returns??? Other teams don't have to punt enough for me to grade.

Game was what I expected, dominated by ND, but the score wasn't as bad as the beat down. Did see some good things:

Effort was there the whole game unlike a couple of earlier ugly losses.
Kudos to Collins for going for two.
Gibbs is a stud. Hope he doesn't get frustrated.
Great scoop and score.
We got an onside kick!
Weather was great!

Then the bad:
ON ND's first drive, 3rd and 2 and they have a TE in the slot and our linebacker lines up 8 yards off of him. How can this happen?
Another illegal participation penalty. We have to lead the nation in these. Why can't we fix this?
How can our kickers be this bad? And these aren't CPJ's players........
Our quarterback cannot hold on to the ball.
Apathy is setting in. Our games are no longer enjoyable.

Freshman quarterbacks missing receivers is not, i assure you, an indicator of future success. Missing receivers is the least of my concerns. Sims will fix that in the film room. Bank on it. You guys that are being critical of Sims are morons.

True freshman quarterback starting his first game:

DJ Uiagalelei took a little while to get going, but a scary half for Clemson’s defense against Boston College forced Dabo Swinney to unleash the five-star freshman. He delivered a monster game: 30 for 41 for 342 yards, two touchdowns, no picks and a 30-yard touchdown run.

but, but, but., Clemson's roster ..blah, blah, blah
Sounds like a future Heisman contender. We'll see what he does next week against a top ranked defense.

You put our QB ahead of our WR at this point. I think our QB has the tools to be successful, the WRs are actually a strength. Agree with you on RB. TE could probably be higher; but someone has to get them the ball when they are wide open before we'll ever know.

If you're getting harassed on 50+% of your plays, then it affects 100% of your throws. You start trying to get the ball out sooner, you dance around more, you brace for impact constantly. You can see it at every level -- you get a bunch of pressure on the QB and he's going to start missing throws even when you don't get to him.

I do worry about Sims. It's impossible to look at some of the easy throws he misses and not get worried. But I tell myself he's a true freshman and he's playing behind an extremely bad OL. We should be rolling with him until next year, and hopefully we start to get a semblance of an OL then. He's got all the tools to be a big time player and his future is full of potential that CGC needs to unlock.

Do you think Sims would do better having Clemson's OL protecting him?

I think I misunderstood your point initially. I think Clemson will get beaten next week.

Agreed. I gave the TE's low marks because they just seem to disappear into the game. ND is a great example of what TE's can be, and as it is, top level TE's are now flocking to ND.
Our RB position is by far the strongest position on the team. Our DL is our weakest, although full of FR, RS-FR, sophomores.

Our OL has played well sporadically. There are plays where the pass blocking looks solid, bit then plays where we just leave a DL or DE unblocked to run unchecked to the QB. Our QB needs consistent play by the OL so he can get better at progressions and check downs.

And dammit, I would like to see a count this season of how many 10+ yard scrambles QB's have made against us. It is almost as if all our DL's, DE'S, LB's get pushed outside leaving a red sea style parting of the LOS.

Yep. On his pass miss to the wide open receiver (TE?), you could tell he rushed the throw. It is almost as if he were expecting to get hit throwing and was adjusting to the hit. He's getting pretty beat up out there.

Sims had a good first game, too.

Apathy is going to be a big problem the next 3 years. Even the most optimistic fans will lose interest in a 3-4 wins a season, season ticket sales will slide and donations will decrease. Hard to tell if covid will still be playing a roll or not ( certainly hope it's at an end! ) Stansbury has indicated that the budget for 2021 is going to take a hit. If we are able to maintain , we as Tech fans are going to have to step up.

Why do you predict that the next three years will be as bad as you say? There isn't much that can be gleaned from these first two years so far especially when we basically have high school kids with no offseason practice playing at key positions. Does the performance not match your expectations given the state of the program?

Even the more optimistic fans won’t be OK with 3&4 win seasons 2-3 years from now. No one is saying this is the ceiling for this staff or team. EVERYONE expects we continue to improve and get back to the point where we’re consistently competing for Coastal division championships. Some believe that a total roster transformation was/is necessary to move away from the 3-O, where others expected results immediately regardless of talent deficiencies... I’d say that’s the primary difference. Extrapolating recent results out for the next 3 years is a piss poor mindset.

I use kind of the same example. I normally tell folks no matter how much I practiced, I was never gonna be Michael Jordan on the courts. There are baseball pitchers who have a regimen of diet, stretching, exercise, who will never be Nolan Ryan.

We have got to get better recruits on the lines. We have some good skill players.

UGAg is a fine example. Their QB is extremely mediocre. However, their OL is nearly NFL in skill level and size. Same for their DL. Dominant players. UGAg has NFL caliber LB's and DB's. Their defense has almost no weak point. Their star LB, can't remember his name, would probably be good for a victory or two just having him anchor our defense.

How many times has our MLB been in position to make a tackle and just missed? In position, has the angle, just out run or just not having the physical stature to deliver a punishing hit. Not able to wrap up because he just doesn't have the body type of a dominant LB. He works extremely hard. He plays extremely hard. I'm sure he practices hard. I'm sure he works out hard. He just is at his development ceiling.

We have got to get better recruits on the lines immediately. I said last week that if we signed 15 OL and DL this season and filled out the class with LB's and a few DB's, I'd be happy.
The white and gold dumpster is ablaze,

The defense did alright under the circumstances. The big problem they have is these teams with bigger offensive lines can just run it down their throats at will, and to this point the one area where Collins' emphasis on recruiting hasn't had a breakthrough has been at the DT position. If Tech stops the run and gets a team in obvious passing downs, they have some young pass rushers off the edge that are promising. But there's been so few times they've been able to get a team into a position to be one-dimensional all season.

Which leads me to my big critique: the offense laying turds in the first half of every game is killing the team. If you've got a defense that's light up front that's getting run on, don't get them slaughtered on TOP by continually going three and out on your possessions to start the game. The play calling and personnel decisions in the entire game, and particularly in the first half, were just frustrating. Notre Dame was obviously loading up against the run and daring Tech to throw it and they just kept running their true freshman RB who hasn't had an offseason in a NCAA S+C program straight into the teeth of Notre Dame's defense. Gibbs is good and he's a star, but give him a damned chance. Or, if you insist on doing that, put a grown man like Mason in to take those carries.

I just don't see the creativity in the playbook. A better coach engineers a way for Gibbs to get a couple of cheap early easy completions under his belt to get his confidence up and then you're not in a position to be so one-dimensional and you're not playing stupid team football where you're continually hanging the defense out to dry.

Beyond that, ball security for Sims continues to be an issue, and anyone involved in the kicking game probably deserves to be loaded in a cannon and shot to the moon at this point.

Feels like they've got one, maybe two more wins left on this schedule that are gettable barring some massive improvements we've yet to see this season. Going to be a long, hard offseason if that's how this all plays out.

Because no matter how many mods you pack into a Civic, it’s not going to be a Porsche.

Sitting right behind the Tech bench it was CLEAR to see this. Not trying to disparage SAs who are giving it their best effort, but the physical comparison between ND's OL and ours is similar to comparing Michael Oher the NFL star and the "Michael Oher" actor in the movie.
Night and day. Our guys look like they have intentionally bulked up with jelly donuts just to get some mass on their bodies. I'm sorry, but they are fat, not big, and as unathletic as #6. That said, I applaud their dedication and effort, however futile.
