ND Postgame Thread

I disagree because guys aren't progressing/developing at any kind of appreciable rate.
Is this a subjective "eye test" evaluation or is there a metric you use to measure the "rate" of progress and development on a game-by-game basis?

"Give it time, they're converting from the 3O" loses its shelf life in year three, IMO.

Sounds like you're on the same page as most of us, Stansbury included:

“So that’s something I talked to (school president G.P. “Bud” Peterson) about early on, was I really felt like we needed to give the new head coach a seven-year contract, knowing that it was going to take a couple of years really to probably transition to whatever systems that they were ultimately going to want to run,” Stansbury said.

Thinking about it, this might be why we're recruiting a couple of TE's this year too. I think there was some discussion of how many we want on roster, but ya it's not like all our current TE's are really TE's.
If we had talent at TE, our walk on long snapper would not be playing a lot of snaps at TE.

Yeah, I think everybody (even those that think we had a good roster in 2018/2019) have to appreciate that the TE position is still a work in progress. We needs these guys to develop into good JR/SRs and have depth with more talented young guys. More or less, we don't have a choice but to play you if you have TE by your name. We can't wait for you to develop or earn the job so there is a good chance some of the guys are out there and might not be 100%.

Yeah, there is a lot of that going on.

Same people that think any comment on the quality of the roster is criticism of Johnson, also think so poorly of those players that true freshman should have replaced them from day 1.

Bottomline is improved recruiting will not show up in results until year 3/4. The hope was that good coaching might coverup for talent before then.
Clemson has 2 true freshman starting on the DL.

We’ve successfully recruited enough at QB, RB, and OL that true freshman can crack the starting lineup.

The fact that hasn’t happened on the absolute weakest unit(s) of the team, the front 7, means we didn’t hit at those groups in recruiting like we needed to.

Anyone that follows recruiting knows the following:

1) 5 Star - potential early starter, likely contributor the 1st year and likely to develop into NFL caliber player
2) 4 Star - potential early contributor that may start by 2nd year; likely to develop into an All-Conference caliber player
3) 3 Star - unlikely to start early but should contribute in 2nd year and start later in career.

There is a difference in recruiting. If GT could recruit in the top 10 range then yes we could expect more of a contribution from our recruits but we do not.

Those guys that are starting for Clemson are like Gibbs. They are ready to go from day 1; most 5 stars are and we aren't talking about average 5 stars but the top of the top.

OK . . . Sims does not impress me as a QB, even for a freshman. Sorry. His pocket awareness and field generalship are poor, but those can be fixed with coaching and experience, so that does not really concern me. What concerns me is that his best asset is his feet, not his arm. He has a strong enough arm, but he is not a consistently accurate passer, even when he has time. Occasionally he will make a spectacular throw, but more often than not he is off target. Rarely does accuracy get fixed after high school. I really, REALLY hope I'm wrong, but that is what I'm seeing. I already saw four years of Reggie Ball - I don't need another four.

yep, he has problems but I remember Joe Ham.he looked like crap early in career.True Fr behind a very avg O line. Tough deal..

Those two freshman on the DL? The five star #1 SDE in the nation and the 5* 1 DT in the nation #1 prospect period in the nation.

in the ACC there are 4 true freshman starting on the front seven. Those two beasts. A high four at FSU and a nobody on Cuse. The latter two are more due to necessity.

outside of total freaks freshman aren’t prepared to play these positions at this level.

this is such a stupid argument. Let it go.

You do realize that recruiting doesn’t start a month before signing day right? The high end players have been recruited since 7th grade by the factories. Clemson, Bama, Ohio State, and UGA should have freshmen who start day 1 because they get the best players, especially along the DLine. You also have to look at position scarcity. There are tons of athletic/fast WR’s and DB’s playing high school ball in the south so those positions are much easier to recruit. The same could be said for RB’s as every college team as legit RB’s. Linemen are much harder to find and the good ones tend to congregate at the factories.

No matter what you think about Collins game day acumen, his relationship building is phenomenal. How else do you think he got Gibbs to sign and was Sims first call after Novell went another direction? We were on Gibbs before he blew up in high school and that relationship kept the factories from poaching him. Collins is building relationships but a lot of these guys are still in 10th and 11th grade. Then you figure a year or two to get acclimated in college and that’s years down the road. There are no quick fixes.

Here‘s the thing - Collins has a vision and is working tirelessly to make it happen knowing he has a 7 year contract. If he succeeds then great for all of us. If not, we’ll move on. But look at the rest of the ACC. How many of them actually have a path to build their program? Clemson, yes, then UNC with the rehiring of Brown. But the rest of the ACC seems to be a rat in a cage for decades with no direction. NC State, Wake, Syracuse, BC, Duke, Miami, UVA, Louisville, and Pitt have done nothing for a long, long time. Miami had their run. VT just lost their version of Dodd, Louisville had Lamar, but that’s it. GT at least tries, hence we hired Johnson to change it up, now we hired Collins to change it up. Those other teams just cycle thru boring coach after retread coach. That’s why I chuckle at so many fan bases who get to blast us right now. Yeah, Syracuse go ahead and enjoy that win that no one remembers. you’ll be in the same spot in a decade but GT will have much higher highs over the next decade.

Still too early to make a judgement but I do expect to see things turning the complete opposite direction of where we are now by game 1 of next season. Cleanup penalties, ball protection, decision making. This isn't about wins right now but it is still way sloppier than it should be....just like all your moms.

By the way. Even if it was a marketing move, drop this promo trash cause it leaves us standing there with our junk in our hands. Blackwatch looked more like it lost the L as we continue to stare at the back of the opponents jerseys while they run down the field with the ball. We can pull that stuff outta our pockets when we're chasing an orange bowl or better.

Please note, all the marketing is for 14-18 year old high school males. It’s not for us.
Exactly. I am 54 years old. I may not like hip hop or rap music, but recruits and players do. Players like Adidas gear. Our players were raised higher tech than I could have ever dreamed as a kid. My dream would have been for people to hear Al Ciraldo call a game with me as QB for GT.

We lose by the same amount in any color jersey. Even bad teams get cool alternate jerseys. You guys are the only ones embarrassed by it.

Apathy is going to be a big problem the next 3 years. Even the most optimistic fans will lose interest in a 3-4 wins a season, season ticket sales will slide and donations will decrease. Hard to tell if covid will still be playing a roll or not ( certainly hope it's at an end! ) Stansbury has indicated that the budget for 2021 is going to take a hit. If we are able to maintain , we as Tech fans are going to have to step up.
Problem is so much of the alumni base care nothing about athletics. I am a long time side walk fan and Tech has a hard time drawing those. Honestly, and this is no one's fault but I am old and simply do not buy in to the new culture. I don't like the dancing on the sidelines, I abhor "money down" I do not see the need for a light show, etc. Just put a good, disciplined product on the field and I am happy. Not seeing that now and quite honestly, doubt that I'll be back next year. Attending games, even watching them on TV is no longer enjoyable. And before anyone points it out, yes, I know that I am in the minority.

It takes winning to attract sidewalk fans. If you build it, they will come. We were attracting plenty of fans in the late 90s during the JoeHam and Godsey years.

It’s Clemson. At the DL position we’re talking about. They are playing over upperclassman, who they themselves were either a high 4 star or a 5 star in his own right.

We’re GT where it’s pretty much accepted by everyone our talent along the front 7 is a joke.

Now, it’s clears you have no idea what I’m even saying or reading into öööö that isn’t there as if it’s some indictment on CGC. He missed on the big targets along the front 7 and it shows. He’s missing, so far, this year.

Why is this controversial?

He's had exactly one full recruiting class and you're holding him to missing big targets on the DL? Jesus. What did you expect? Some of these DL prospects have had YEARS of contact with coaches from Clemson, UGAg, Ohio State, LSU, Auburn, Florida, Alabama... It is gonna take a hot minute.
