New OL Consultant Added to the Staff

Larry? Sewak put a better OL on the field that could run the TO. Are you implying he could also recruit and coach an OL to run a pro-style or RPO offense better than Key?

Me like logic. Some say maybe too much.

Sewak put a line together than could run/TO block well while he was here. Has CBK put together an OL that could run block, pass block, RPO block, TO block, or pro-style block well while he has been here? IMO the OL hasn't been noticeable good at anything the past 3 seasons. I think one of the reasons Gibbs left was because he didn't want to play behind it anymore. If it was just jimmies and joes being shoved into the backfield it would be one thing; but the problems on OL have been worse than just that.

1 good year in “decades” you say? Considering they won the ACC in 2007, that is already false. You might want to look at Wake’s record vs GT since the magical high water mark for GT in 2014. I don’t think you’ll be happy with what you see.

We are 8-23 all-time vs them.

They have beaten us twice out of the last 7 games (going back to decades since you latched into that for some reason).

Since 2002 (past 20 years) they have had 9 seasons of 5 or less wins... ALMOST HALF OF THE PAST TWO DECADES HAVE BEEN 5 OR LESS WINS!

No thanks.

Didn't get a chance to finish my post.

Now to your credit, since 2016, they have improved. They have had 1 4 win season, but the rest have been 7 and 8 win seasons with last year going 11. Maybe they are headed in the right direction.

Wake Forest offense rank

2021 - 4th

2020 - 19th

2019 - 43rd

2018 - 37th

2017 - 21st first year they switch to run blocking heavy scheme

2016 - 119th

2015 - 120th

2014 - 127th Dave Clawson's first year

Gotta thank you for forcing me to look into this.

While they run RPO as base, their offense is considered unique by many coaches who have to play against them. Their bread and butter is attacking the A-gap until you stop it, then it's up to the QB to give or pass to the open receiver if the A-gap is stopped.

The key to their whole offense... Wait for it... Is RUN BLOCKING because they can't get the same offensive line talent as the big boys to have drop back passing.

When they got to Wake and realized the talent that they had, running a classic drop-back passing game was out of the picture. In their first three seasons, only one team in the country allowed more sacks; nearly 10% of all drop-backs found their passers on the turf. Ruggiero joked that by the time the quarterback took the third step of his drop, the play would end up a sack. Now, Clawson says half of their passing plays start out as runs which makes it easier for the offensive line. Run blocking as much as possible can help level the playing field against some of the best pass rushers the Clemsons or Florida States or Miamis of the conference can line up. They can’t simply tee off on what they assume will be a passing play because so much of what Wake does starts out as a run. The runs themselves have also come behind more double team blocking, which is easier for offensive linemen to execute.

So it looks like the success wake has had since 2016 is as a result of then acknowledging their recruiting limits, and switch to a run heavy blocking scheme.

Remind you of any former coaches at Tech?

The 2007 class was #18. That’s not barely in the Top 25. Collins 2020 class at #25 is just barely in the Top 25.

Stop with the APR garbage. That hasn’t mattered, nor will it even be a variable soon enough when the NCAA is completely out of P5 football.
Nil is making things worse for Tech in addition to APR. Where's all the big time recruits key said he was going to bring in?

And if your outside of the top 15, the ranking becomes more and more meaningless. Here is a look at class recruiting rankings (24/7) outside of top 15 for the year 2018 then looking at said school's win loss record for 2021 season.

16. Washington 4-8
17. Texas A&M 8-4
18. South Carolina 7-6
19. UCLA 8-4
20. North Carolina 6-7
21. Tennessee 7-6
22. Michigan 12-2
23. Nebraska 3-9
24. Virginia Tech 6-7
25. TCU 5-7

26. NC State 9-3
27. Mississippi State 7-6
28. Maryland 7-6
29. Baylor 11-2
30. Louisville 6-7
31. Michigan State 11-2
32. Ole Miss 10-2
33. Utah 10-3
34. Oklahoma State 11-2
35. West Virginia 6-7
36. Arizona State 8-5
37. Kentucky 9-3
38. Minnesota 9-4
39. Iowa 10-3

40. Stanford 3-9
41. Vanderbilt 2-10
42. California 5-7
43. Missouri 6-7
44. Georgia Tech ughhhh 3-9
45. Arkansas 8-4
46. Wisconsin 9-4
47. Washington State 7-6
48. Pittsburgh 11-3
49. Cincinnati 13-1
50. Indiana 2-10
51. Syracuse 5-7
52. Purdue 9-4

The above shows pretty clearly how a recruiting ranking outside of the top 15 is very much a crapshoot with respect to the team's overall performance.

Solid post. Thanks for digging up that data.

What does NIL have to do with CBK? This is 100% on GT and their delusional belief that they are MIT, etc while pretending / misleading ticket holders (like yourself I assume) that they truly want to be a competitive P5 program soon to be P3 football program.

Goes back to GOL’s statement circa 1998/99 “School wants GT to be Harvard M-F and FSU every Saturday….” You can transpose FSU for Bama now.

Fact is, the school doesn’t give 2 ishes about football. When people start taking off their gold colored homer glasses and realize that, maybe then some resources / change from the school president on down will actually take place. Until then, it’s nothing more than blaming the state of Georgia, UGA, ACC, etc for every reason why GT can’t compete with the top 50 programs.

I don't disagree that we self impose some of it.

But you also have to dig deeper before you make accusations. GT has wanted to expand the majors offered for a long time, but the state (run by lots of UGA grads) won't allow it (yet they gave a green light to UGA to start an engineering school).

The resources are more the self imposed one (fans/alumni) for lack of donations...

All I'm saying is that those things will not change anytime soon, so the next best thing is to recognize your shortcomings and figure out a way to fix them.

Like how we ran the option, how coastal Carolina runs a version of the option, how Washington State, Texas Tech, and Miss State run air raid to compensate, and finally how you unwittingly pointed out that Wake Forest has done the same. Can't get the same recruits (especially on the lines, unlike key claimed he could do and more easily here than Alabama) so we run something different that less sought after recruiters can run really well.

CGC fired after this season, Key promoted to HC, this guy steps in as OL coach. No other real changes on offense. Turnover the defensive staff. That's where this is headed.
If the current coach has to be fired for yet another poor performance, Stansbury will not be the guy making the next hire.

I‘m talking about overall records since GT’s high water mark of 2014. Some of you have a truly inflated (gold colored glasses) perception of what GT is right now. I’ll clarify for you, Wake has been the better program since the magical 2014 season.

GT 2 winning season since 2014 compared to WF’s 5

Yup ever since they changed their offensive line blocking scheme to be centered around run blocking. Guarantee we'd have the same number or better with a coach not named Collins.

That’s not true at all. We gotta stop loving living in fantasy land in regards to what was on the roster Winter 2018. The OL room was in shambles and devoid of talent, plus we were not going to be able to Tobias left & Tobias right ourselves into 6+ wins

Wrong. We gotta stop blaming all our problems on the players/roster.
