Official Option maggots vs No-option maggots Battleground Thread

Who are the 6'7" 315 pound OL that CGC or CBK have recruited? :dunno: Or do they not want them either.
Wing Green Jr.
Mike Mooney's kid, Bobby Mooney, has reiterated that he's signing in February as well. He's 6'7" and I think something like 325 or so. And his daddy was one of my favorite GT football players of all time. That dude was a beast on the 1990 National Championship team.

But if you cannot look at the length and size of the OL we're recruiting now and see a difference between them and their predecessors, I suggest you call this place:

You went to Tech. Is 309 > 300 or is 309 < 300?

Also, for detailed purposes:
Jakiah Leftwich 6'6" 327
Zeek Biggers (DL). 6'6" 363
Horace Lockett (DT) 6'6" 338
And there are about 10 that are 6'4" and 300+ pounds. I haven't seen that kind of size on GT lines since 1990. It's nice.

Jordan Williams, also

We have a lot of huge lineman now. What we don’t have is a competent OL coach.

I’m assuming he’s still our OL coach of course. Maybe he’s been Thackered?

I disagree with you on that. Anybody good enough that Nick Saban wants him back is pretty damn good at his job.

OL isn't like skill positions. You don't often take an 18 or 19 year old and turn them into a competent D1 lineman. Those take time to grow and mature. Now that we have some size and some depth, now is when it will be fair to judge Key on his job as OL coach, IMO.

When did Saban ask for Key to return? I missed that.

That’s like saying O’Leary sucked when FSU kicked his ass. Those teams kick everyone ass.

Using PJ’s last 2 years against UGA as a measuring stick is especially strange since we actually beat them in Athens only 1 year prior. As long as we’re cherry-picking stats, CPJ beat UGA twice in a row in Athens. How many times has that happened since Dodd?

Attitudes like yours regarding the option are why we DIDN’T EVEN INTERVIEW a guy with arguably the best resume on the coaching market in favor of a guy with very little HC resume at all. Again, look where it’s got us.

I know for a fact my attitude has literally Jack öööö to do with hiring decisions being made on the Flats. I wasn't queried on whether I liked Monken, CGC, Bohannon, or Belichek. Were you?

You can't have it both ways: You can't claim the TO is the Great Talent Equalizer and then acknowledge that it actually wasn't doing much equalizing to the good teams on our schedule and even some of the avg-to-bad teams (Duke). It beat some good teams and lost to a few. We beat Clemson a few times under Gailey and top-ranked Auburn and SoCal teams under him too. No, I don't want him nor his coaching back and thought it was time for a change at the end of '07 too. But we're still paying for the decision to go backwards a few decades with our '08 hire.

Not in 2018, but when Willy Korn was mentioned as an OC candidate recently, some people immediately ruled him out because “option.” That’s literally crazy to me. He may or may not have been the right guy, but that type of reaction is illogical.

I am not an X's and O's-oriented fan, myself. My objection to the option is based on perception and recruiting challenges. I dunno if the Coastal Carolina version of it would carry the same stigma. I suspect it would be less, but I really don't know.

I was all pumped for Kittley, but at the end of the day, I get the wisdom of not making yet another big schematic switch right now.

I dunno if Saban wants him back. Apparently, South Carolina and Florida wanted him in a big way.
Good for them. We need an OL coach. He can dance with the 5*’s, but he’s shown zippo he can develop anyone without an exceptional level of talent & size to go with it.

When Key left to come to GT, Saban made him a counter offer and tried to get him to stay. Nick doesn't do that for someone who can't coach.

Just going by what Quinlan and some of the paid sites said at the time.
I’ll take your word for it but I never, ever saw 1 reference to Saban wanting to keep Key.

He did not.If he had of wanted to keep Key, they could have easily doubled our offer. After the Clemson loss, sa(t)an was ready to move on.

Oh yeah. I mean, the guy only coached at Alabama with Saban for 3 seasons as the OL coach. They won a national championship, 3 SEC championships and went to the playoffs every year he was there and he was considered one of their top recruiters. He brought in 5 star offensive lineman Evan Neal and two 4-star offensive linemen Pierce Quick (recognize that name?) and Amari Knight in their final class right before he left to come to GT.

Yeah, you're right. I'm sure Saban wouldn't want that guy coming back. LOL. Frigging moron.

Shamire? Didnt we get his teammate who was a similar size? Barnes?

Fwiw, I agree that we havent been averaging that size.

Not you personally, but obviously people who do make those decisions felt similarly.

What?

No waffling here - I think I’ve been pretty consistent in saying that we consistently punched above our weight on offense. No need to cherry-pick specific games that did or did not go our way when there are stats that show over a decade plus that our offense was almost always better than you would expect with our talent. In 11 years under CPJ, our offense was better than our average recruiting rankings 10 times. 2015 was the lone exception.

And FWIW, it’s not about some magic system being an equalizer. There are some really ööööty option coaches out there. We just had a really good one.
