Other Schools' Coaching Changes [Now with Colorado's Deion]

I'm starting to come around to y'alls point of view.

I'm stubborn but not stupid - I think you guys are right - Deion would be a blast of fresh air to our program. I'm at the point where I don't think anybody takes Collins seriously - other ACC coaches laugh behind his back (or on camera when he makes colossally bad game time decisions). Curse me if you must but I will never get over the clock management failure that led to losing to the Citadel. That kind of mistake should prevent you from ever being a head coach.

So I'll relent and welcome a transient coach who can put our program back together. What bothers me the most is that our assistant staff (with the possible exception of Thacker) is as good as we have had since Ross was here. I think promoting either Chip Long or Chris Weinke is the best way out of this. And for those of you who question my choice of Weinke, that guy is a HC waiting to happen - if not here, somewhere else and we are going to regret it.
I appreciate Key as a human but Ellen Degeneres could put out an offensive line this bad. There is no evidence he can recruit, coach, train, or evaluate talent. I can't disagree with Long or Weinke if we don't pay them the big base salary until they earn it. I wouldn't mind ridiculous incentives though, like say 250k or more per win over 5 wins.

Still, here are the benefits of a run at Deion:
(a) already rich, so not as money distracted as most. This is a big deal to a strapped school.
(b) will generate a lot more excitement inside and outside the fan base. This is a big deal to a school with fan interest at a historic low.
(c) has shown serious promise wrt recruiting. This is an exciting match for us.

Lots of programs, from huge to middling, were looking for HCs this off-season not one went for coach prime.

First of all, you seriously don't remember who Deion Sanders is if you think he doesn't care about the money. That was one of the most unalienable truths about his entire football career: He wants to be paid. Jackson State is getting a good deal because he doesn't have the clout under his belt to command a big salary. As his star grows in the coaching world that WILL change.

The bigger the program, the harder it is to hire a high risk/high reward guy like Deion. Taking a flyer on Deion is the kind of move that would take an AD down if Deion crashes and burns. Hard to take that risk unless you are rock bottom already.

I have a lot of respect for DS but I don't think he's up for the nonsense that he would encounter at GT.

If you ask me, our next HC is Chris Weinke. That guy has it going on.

Let me be perfectly clear, as I said earlier, money always matters. But based on him working cheap while earning clout, why would he not work for cheap for us while earning clout?

That's why we need to move now, we can't afford him after he earns clout.

Unless he earns clout here, in which case hell yes he deserves a big cut of what would undoubtedly be better GTAA financials. I would give him a contract with insane bonuses.

I agree 100% with this take.

I think Sanders is smart enough to not only go where the money is. He is smart enough to go wherever he can succeed. Face it. The ACC is a great place to succeed. Geoff Collins, aside. The SEC, for example, would be harder, along with the BIG 10. That leaves PAC 12 and BIG 12.. Considering he probably cares about defense, the BIG 12, would be a bad fit. So, that leaves the PAC and us... I think the ACC, would get the nod. FSU would probably get more consideration than we will. But, Sanders likes Atlanta, from what I understand.

Yep, no program got there last year, after another year of coaching more may be interested and then another surely someone will.

Some middle tier program like ours is going to take the leap either this year or next. if we fire Collins this year, I would very much like coach prime on the flats

And will Weinke after he has experienced it first hand?

you posted that Deion would not be up for the nonsense at GT and that Weinke should be the next coach. My question is why would Weinke want the job here when he will have actually experienced the nonsense first hand versus Deion getting a big raise to go to a city he likes?

"It" managed to get to a real coach whose record was well established before he got here and he won a MNC here. So, why wouldn't it get to Weinke or DS ? When you see respected posters pushing this nonsense, you know the depths of our current malaise. Z

Deion would not be phased by the nonsense. He likes to create his own nonsense. We would have a coach that makes commercials with Saban. It would bring a shot of energy to a football program that could use it.

LSU fired Orgeron and had to pay him 17.1 million. We can’t even afford to pay 7 million to fire our guy who has had 0% success whereas Orgeron won the whole damn thing.

If we could hire Deion today, I bet we could find the extra 2 million in savings instead of waiting until season’s end.

Ya but dat TStan tho

Priiiiiiimeeeeeee Tiiiiiiiimmmmmme.

Apparently Sanders was being recruited by Georgia Bulldogs coach Vince Dooley in 1984, when on an otherwise pleasant visit he learned Dooley expected him to redshirt. You'll be shocked to learn this upset Sanders:

I said, "redshirt? I'm gonna start. What do you mean redshirt?" I couldn't believe he put me in that category. I crossed Georgia off the list immediately. I just saw his team get its butt kicked and the corners looked horrible. I had really liked Georgia, too.

Sanders mentioned the team that beat Georgia as being the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, though he sounds unsure. Tech did beat Georgia in 1984, and by two scores
