I think most of his fans want more 2014s, and would rather have a guy they know can deliver them than reshuffling the deck and ending up with who knows what.

Well, we will have to shuffle that deck at some point soon. Fortunately, and what will come to a surprise to many CPJ fans, there are more possibilities out there than just Chan Gailey. Who knows - we could suck (no different than 2011,15,17) or win big.

How long do you think he should live off that year? Did you want him fired after 2015?

I was a lot more sympathetic to firing him after 2013 than I am now.

Do we agree that he's lived long enough off 2014? Coincidentally, this is the Senior class of the guys he was able to recruit after 2014, which should've been a highwater-mark for recruiting, given our upward trajectory at that point. I hope they go out with a bang!

True, but since CPJ was hired, which other ACC schools have made better hires?

Clemson, Duke

Arguably Miami and FSU, but I don’t think either of those guys (or Dabo) would out perform CPJ at Tech.

Well then 2016 happened. Did you think 2016 argues for keeping CPJ or for dumping him? You’ve got to build a case one way or the other, and it’s a combination of recent results that does it. If CCG had won just one of the final three games in 2096, he wouldn’t have been fired after 07. In CPJ’s case, the argument was building in 13 but he’s shown enough of what he can do since then to be given more chances.

Define "soon". CPJ is only 60. Saban is 6 years older and both of them could coach into their seventies if they wanted to. Is there some other factor that is going to require us to switch coaches in the near future?

Let's keep Natty talk out of any CPJ GT conversations, of which this is. I don't care about his HS'ish championships in the 80s. We've not sniffed a natty under CPJ nor will we. How stupid can you possibly be, Colt?

We were a FG away from making the CFP in 2014. That's sniffing a natty in my opinion.

I think Richt might, just due to being a superior recruiter and having a system that funnels loads of talent to the NFL.

I think CPJ has earned the chance to coach us this year and I am hoping his post-2014-recruited class of seniors shows that he can Win Big for us more than once in 8 years. Another losing campaign should make 2019 up for debate.

Hasn't CPJ himself said he's only got a few more years left?

We were a bizarre turnover away from losing to Southern at home and got manhandled by Puke and UNC that same year. That's not sniffing a natty in my opinion.

Well if you want you can start a poll and see what the rest of us think of your opinion. The ACC champion was going to the CFP in that situation. Pretty clear to most anyone.

That’s fair, and I think you’d find some support for that view around here. If we have another losing season, then I think 2019 becomes a question mark. It would depend on a variety of factors including reasons for the losses, scale of losses, recruiting, and available coaching replacements.

Even if he had, and I don't recall that sentiment, that's a "want to" question. It's not like he'll be ineligible to coach, or incapable of it, in a few years. The "want to" side of the equation is probably on the uptick anyways, with the locker room and other ongoing improvements that he's been asking for forever. I'm not saying he will stick around the whole time or he won't, but it doesn't seem to me that anybody could say that we will have to replace our coach soon, at least on the basis of that.

Baylor or TCU were already making the same argument. Doubtful a 2-loss team with those bad losses would've made it.

And if you think for half a second that I could begin to give a öööö what anyone else's opinion is here on CPJ, you haven't been paying much attention.

Man, this place is gonna be a funeral home when he leaves lol.

It's gonna happen, btw. We WILL play football with another coach beside CPJ when he retires - I hope some of you guys realize that. It will not be the end of football at GT, nor was CPJ the beginning.

Of course it won't be the end, Monken will do just fine.
