Post game Discussion 9.30.2023

Bullshit it’s all on the coaches. At what point do we expect players to motivate themselves and have some pride? You’d think they’d get tired of the other team beating them like yard dogs.
If they’re not motivated it’s still on the coaches.

These are not middle schoolers. In 1945 people this age were storming beaches all over the world.

Stop coddling these little pansies. I expect them to man up and have some ööööing pride.
Noone’s coddling anyone.

And most of the guys storming the beaches were scared ööööless. I grew up with a relative who’d survived the Bulge and wore the scars the rest of his life. Volunteered his senior year in high school. He had to grow up fast, but also had to answer to a chain of command. That chain of command had to discipline the ranks, know their limits, and answer for failures. More to it than telling them to man up.

If you watch Swamp Kings on Netflix, you’ll see Brandon Spikes recalling his freshman year and how he didn’t want to practice as hard as Siler and Tebow (the team leaders) and Meyer were pushing everyone. Spikes said that Florida was training “like they were going to Iraq.”

We need to train like we are going to Iraq.

Looking like this. He was on the previous failed staff and he should have cleaned house on the D side of the ball. I understand the "budget" for the staff, but there is NO WAY that whatever Thacker is stealing from GT in salary couldn't be used to upgrade the coaching on that side of the ball.

Key is a small upgrade over Goof at this point. For a player that was known as a tough guy when he played, his team is soft.
We were 85th in defense with 3 really good players who weren't coming back so we absolutely should've cleaned house. That being said, our OC hire didn't impress and from what I've heard the DC candidates were even less inspiring. I think there would've been a lot if "wtf" second guessing if he'd pulled the trigger. I think we made some mistakes switching up our DL coaching and we needed to find a way to retain Semore.

100%.

A clean start, rip off the band aid from the previous coach's wounds, insert euphemism here was needed.

The OC has at least shown flashes in each game, but hasn't be able to get the O consistently moving. It also doesn't help if the O has to be near perfect in efficiency due to the D being mostly hot garbage.

I said in the Louisville game thread that Faulkner was no better than P'Nut and Long, and he's proving me right.
Just got home, so trying to catch up.

Faulkner is doing a good job. We are middle of the pack in conference, but we have played 3 pretty decent teams out of 5 games. And all of this is year one.

We are on year 5 of this defense and it hasn’t shown the ability to be any better than about 85th in FBS. We are consistently one of the worst P5 performers on D.

I don't deny that Thacker's D sucks, but the terrible play calling by Faulkner was obvious in the L'ville game, and continues. He seems to be content with a 2TD lead and, instead of calling plays with the potential to extend that lead ASAP, he backs off an calls plays that bear no resemblance at all to the plays he called to get that 2TD lead. When you've got momentum going in your favor, don't ever back off. Continue to do the same thing until the game is totally out of reach. He has backed off in every game so far this season. What's it gonna take for him to wake up and use King's obvious talents every time he takes the field? King sadly didn't have a very good game himself yesterday, but it was good enough to get that early lead, and even with later mistakes, I think we could have easily continued to score until the game was out of reach, IN SPITE OF THE LOUSY DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCE.

How are people pooping on Faulker here? His O, even on an admittedly mediocre day yesterday, when he was ripped out of his game plan and having to try to catch up to stinking Bowling Green, still put up 417 yards of offense and really 31 points (we gave away an XP and passed on a chip-shot FG). Yes, it should have been 40+ points, but still... yesterday's loss was on the D.

Those guys just plain did not show up to play. That staff's hind ends ought to be rosy red from the butt whooping they've taken at the hands of Brent Key since last night.

Do you not think that maybe the other teams coaches are making adjustments while ours don’t.

The offensive coaching is good and the defensive coaching is terrible. Have to fire the defensive coordinator at year end or maybe sooner. We have some decent dline recruits coming in so may need to retain assistants so we keep them. I cannot explain why the tackling is so horrendous. We either go in too high instead of low or we don't wrap up if go in low. If I were coach, I would forget scheming and work on fundamental tackling drills all week. My motto would be "we are going to find out who can tackle and who cannot." If we are beat up for Saturday game due to practicing too hard - so be it but we have to do something about the tackling.

Tired of our offense escaping blame. 20 points (I'm ignoring the last garbage time meaningless TD) against Bowling Green is ööööing pathetic. A few nice passing plays don't erase the otherwise-massive turd it laid the rest of the afternoon. Hell, I'm in agreement with @USCJacket on this one.
Well, that’s twice you and I are in agreement this week. That’s an unusual stat. Lol

Reality is, while this season still has 7 games remaining, the staff needs to evaluate all positions across the board and make wholesale changes. This should include staff changes. The program is in a rut for 5+ years and something has to change. If the CFB relegation theory ever comes to fruition, GT would be on the bubble to be relegated at this point. Fact is, GT is in the bottom 4 of the ACC right now.

Well, obviously that is part of the problem. Faulkner doesn't adjust, except when he has a lead and he adjusts his play callng downards, or after he finally realizes that things have gone south and he goes back to what worked in the beginning.

Until you consider the fact that the way we put up over 20 proves we could probably have put up over 40, but for terrible offensive play calling.
Problem is a constant theme with GT football on offense for going on 7 years. A bad OL. The last time GT has had a good OL was 2016. There is no excuse for that at this point. That’s 100% on the current staff.

While GT has upgraded at QB and WR depth, the RB position isn’t what it used to be. While everything can be fixed quickly using the Portal, GT won’t likely land the instant impact transfers along the OL.

Defense is an ongoing problem. This has been a glaring problem since Tenuta was not retained when CPJ took over. CPJ went through numerous DC’s, 2 of which in Wommack and Groh were legitimate hires. Yet at GT struggled. Wommack goes to Ole Miss with pieces to work with on D and thrives.

Fast forward to now, and the same problems that have been GT issues for 15+ years remain. Lack of a front 7 on D.

If we look at a comparable program in the ACC in Duke, Elko has been a HR hire. He was known as a D guru from his time at ND to TAMU before taking the Duke HC job. Somehow Duke has managed to land 2 VERY good HC’s back to back, and fundamentally Duke is a very solid team. If not for Sam Hartman making that last gasp scramble for 16 yards, Duke is 5-0 and nearing the Top 10.

On paper GT has more talent on both sides of the ball but continues to struggle. GT needs to break the bank this offseason and go land some elite assistants. At this point, it’s really the only way the program even gets to 6-6 by 2025. The 2024 schedule currently has FSU, ND, Clemson, UGA, NCSU along with UofL. Not exactly an easy slate.

He's one of our best fans. No sarcasm.
They met me when I was having an existential crisis involving GT football knowing that just beneath my feet (where the locker room is) that no adjustments were being made, no fire being lit. The guy next to me, who never drinks, had him a stress reducing beer after half. I should have gone and gotten two (you can buy two at a time) and gotten my buzz going.
