Rules would need updating, obviously, but under the current rules, once a player enters the transfer portal, other teams are free to contact them, while they are still enrolled at the first school for the remainder of the semester. The first school is not obligated to take them back, but they can, if the player decides not to transfer.

If kids start transferring at-will frequently, I'd think schools would need to start considering re-signing players that tested the transfer portal but decided to stay (having re-recruiting them essentially)...at least the most valuable players. So players would be opening up themselves to transfer options by joining the portal and yes, actively getting recruited/poached by other schools.

Edit* The alternative would be make the players commit to leave their first school if they enter the portal, prior to being allowed to talk to other schools, forcing them to take a shot in the dark and risk not getting picked up and left without a scholarship anywhere, which doesn't sound like a very pro-player option either.

Are we sure this was his appeal? Or was it the first request. It seems we knew about Sims/Clayton before Ezzard so it would seem strange to find out Ezzard’s appeal first. Maybe this was just a delayed response to the initial denied request.

I agree...and that stipulation is spelled out if he were the one sick or hurt, he would need to be within 100 miles, OR the closest D1 school if there is not one. But for family sickness, that option is not there. Not defending it or saying it makes sense, just throwing it out there.
 
NCAA could not have handled this transfer portal thing any worse than it has. Which is part of their brand. Best explanation I have for the constant WTF factor in their decisions is they're running scared from particular lawyers who will challenge them on restraint of trade and open the thing up to total free agency. Thus if Justin Fields and Tate Martell have more threatening lawyers, they get immediate eligibility. Some of the kids with completely reasonable reasons, like Luke Ford who has a terminally ill grandfather, are denied. College football is the greatest sport, run by the biggest gang of idiots.

If it's not the appeal, it sounds as if he isn't planning to appeal at all. My guess is maybe Ezzard was denied a week or two ago and it just didn't become public, but I dunno.
 


Sims confirms he was denied a waiver but indicates he is appealing. Given that Ezzard made no mention of an appeal and seems resigned to sitting out, he is either not appealing or was already denied.
 
We knew they would last minute deny our players' waivers. I am not surprised one bit. It was a calculated move on the part of the NCAA.

Question: did any other schools get any waivers granted or denied this week?

USCw got one approved last week.
 
How in the ever-living **** does Ezzard get denied coming closer to home while Tate Martell got approved moving further away from home explicitly due to a coaching change? It seems all coaching changes are not created equal, and I wouldn't be shocked if this is intentionally to try to deter future transfers from coming back home to where most of college football farms its talent.

China is less corrupt than this.

Miami probably screwed Ezzard, too, if I had to guess.
 
Why is input from the school being left included within the assessment? It should be maybe two check boxes with their input.

Is he in good academic standing?
Is he medically cleared to play this coming season?

Jesus. What a ööööed up process allowing them to editorialize their input.

I heard one compelling argument that the schools do not want the NCAA to go away because the schools fear that student-athletes would organize against member schools. Perhaps the NCAA is the hen in charge of the fox house.

No doubt. It sucks for the players and it sucks for the fans. But it works for the colleges

Agree. The school being departed has to validate the "mitigating circumstance", which essentially asks it to advertise its warts and encourage more transfers. This is not the only case this year of a player leaving Michigan and accusing Harbaugh of poisoning the process.

For Myles, they filled out the form saying he was leaving for more playing time instead of coming closer to home. "Oops, the AD made a clerical error" -- I don't think so.
