If Penn State had 1 loss, they would be in. They actually had a chance of making it by virtue of winning the conference championship. If Michigan had beaten Ohio State, Penn State would have been sitting at home and not even in the conversation with their 2 losses.

Last year, Florida was in play had they won the SEC Championship game, finishing with two losses (as heavily unlikely as it would have been for them to beat Bama). Ole Miss also was in play, even with the loss to Memphis, had they not dropped that game to Arkansas, giving Bama the division.
 
The bottom line is that the four best teams in the nation are going to play for the title, at least as far as this season is concerned. The complaints over the conference championship issues are legitimate in the bigger picture, but that isn't going to be settled for as long as the conference championships and the playoff are so disconnected from one another. Fixing that requires at least more restructuring of the bowl system, but the people in charge are less concerned with that than they are how the ratings for the current system will fare. I prefer the CFP to the BCS but the plus-one system is a band-aid and should be considered transitional. We were never going to make the jump from the bowl system directly to the sort of tournament the sport deserves. I'd like to think the CFP in its current iteration is the first step from the former to the latter.

Seems like we need a backstop to end the cycle. I contend that conference championship should be that backstop.

If you have a situation where the conference champion is so inferior that there is no cycle, then of course, the conference champion is out.

Pretty small sample size of CFB playoffs to pull from.

Frankly I don't even know what kind of Jedi mindtrick you used to get me to argue with you in the first place. I think LSU should be ranked lower or not at all (at the very least they should be behind Pitt and Florida). You think the B1G got an unwarranted amount of credit. The two ideas aren't mutually exclusive. I actually agree with you, but I've also lived through a decade of "sEcSPN" so this isn't the first time I've seen a conference get too much credit.
 
If Venables plays Urban's spread like he played Fuente's it is going to be another Bammer vs. T-OSU final.

Also this. Playoffs should consist of conference champs no matter what. If you don't think the best team in your conference won your conference championship game, then you should rethink how you pick your conference champion. Otherwise let the players on the field decide things.

The real loser here is Western Michigan. Win all of your games but have no shot at a championship.
