Why Brent Key should be HC

While I know this thread wasn't intended to be very serious, it is an interesting commentary on the state of our program that any win against pretty much any team leaves a decent portion of the fanbase enamored with the coach.

I think a lot of it is that Key gives great press conferences, you can tell how much he loves Tech, and he has the players playing incredibly hard for him. It's very easy to want to root for him.

It's almost like those are all very important qualifications for a head coach we would hire

Press conference today was good.

Maybe I'm old school, but I can tell that Key is personally invested in GT football doing well for its own sake. Not for his salary, not for his resume, but because it's something that he, as a man, simply wants to see. In my opinion, that is a huge X-factor over every other candidate. It goes beyond being a 'Tech Man' a la Stansbury. It's deeper.
What? He is the same guy who has been on staff since the beginning of the worst era of GT football ever, right? And we never heard a peep from him as he watched the turd destroy this program. All those GT guys who were on staff and sat quietly by are dead to me. If they would have resigned en mass after year 2 or held a press conference to convince TStan to end it they would have been have seen as heroes and probably considered for future GT jobs. But they took the checks while the turd burned it to the ground. They can all be gone. Key can still be invested just like we all are but he can do it from the couch or stands like every other GT fan.

All I know is that the type of effort Im seeing now is football worth watching. Key is a hard nosed passionate coach who a lot of players will rally around. Those that dont will leave and be replaced by more of that type. Pyron is ground zero for that passion from what Ive seen of him. I dont see Key trying to run out the clock against Ugag to save face, either. JMHO

Key (and any other coach being considered for the job) will present to JBatt the plan he will put in place to return GT football to prominence. The decision will rest on the credibility of the plan and the ability of the applicant to pull it off. Key’s record will provide credibility (or not) but isn’t the be all end all of his bid for the job. Assuming he actually wants it.

I overheard a locker room story from a player parent in the stands yesterday about some guys still laughing and having a good time in the locker room after the UVA loss.

I was also infuriated with a couple of instances where players didn’t seem to know where the first down marker was on critical third downs.

We’ve made some strides post-Collins, but it seems like there are still some gaps in coaching that need to be rectified, and some “I hate losing more than I like hugs” culture that needs to be instilled in some guys. Key seems like the right KIND of guy to do that, but the Collins baggage might disqualify him.

That's easy to say in hindsight but it's not actually how it would have went down. If they all did that after year 2 they would have been seen as quitters who deserted the program during a transition we all knew would be tough, and then they would have been blamed for the lack of progress in the third year because it basically would have been a new rebuild.

I've had some bad bosses before and you're really limited in what you can do to counter them, outside of just quitting. And quitting isn't seen as some heroic move because the people in charge tend to really like the boss and default to siding with him. In this case, you know Stansbury would have been standing 100% behind Collins after year 2 no matter what, given that he did it after year 3 and it ultimately cost him his job.

This is called a thought process based solely on feelings and emotions. The exact thing you don't want to make major decisions by.

Could Brent Key be our Pat Fitzgerald? Would we be ok with that?

It is a tough call on Coach Key, it is almost like we should give him a 1 year contract and then decide. We could be and i dont know passing on a very good football coach

That would be similar to what the Braves did with Snitker. And look how that turned out.

What was he supposed to do? Lead a raid on Collins' house with the other assistants?

LOL! I understand why a lot of fans would like to see Brent Key as our Head Coach moving forward. He is clearly passionate about his Alma mater and our players like playing for him. However, our OL has been abysmal since Key arrived with GC in 2019. Also, Coach Key actually kept Zach Gibson #2 on the dept chart and had Zach Pyron #3! That blunder cost us a win against UVA and very well may prevent us in making a bowl game. Nevertheless, Coach Key has done a good job overall. I would have never given us a chance to beat Pitt and Duke (especially coming after the turmoil of firing a head coach and the AD).

I personally hope we hire a proven head coach...Someone who has had winning seasons at a Power 5 school. I would also like to see Tech not retain any coach GC hired (with maybe the exception of Thacker). Our defense is the main reason Tech has managed to win 3 games under Coach Key.

GO JACKETS!

Could give him a four year contract with a very low buyout. Not only does that let us see if he's a good coach but it also lets the new AD get finances in order before trying to compete with other schools for an established HC.

Definitely would not give Key anything other than a very team friendly, "prove it" contract. He has no leverage in this situation.
