Why Brent Key should be HC

It's almost like those are all very important qualifications for a head coach we would hire
A coach is first and foremost a leader, then he becomes an X and O guy. Strategy and tactics come into play after you have convinced Jimmy and Joe that your game game plan will work.

That's easy to say in hindsight but it's not actually how it would have went down. If they all did that after year 2 they would have been seen as quitters who deserted the program during a transition we all knew would be tough, and then they would have been blamed for the lack of progress in the third year because it basically would have been a new rebuild.

I've had some bad bosses before and you're really limited in what you can do to counter them, outside of just quitting. And quitting isn't seen as some heroic move because the people in charge tend to really like the boss and default to siding with him. In this case, you know Stansbury would have been standing 100% behind Collins after year 2 no matter what, given that he did it after year 3 and it ultimately cost him his job.
It would have been easy. No hindsight needed. At the end of year 2 if Brent Key, Tashard Choice, Marco Coleman, and others on staff would have held an off campus press conference (of course giving TStan and Cabrera a heads up) and actually gave a statement and answered questions our program and themselves would have benefitted. By that point it was obvious (Citadel, Temple, Clemson with 73, VT 45-0, UCF boat race, UGA we were a non factor). All those guys would have had jobs the next year and their integrity would still be intact.

And to compare these jobs to everyday jobs is just ludicrous. Nobody cares about normal jobs. These guys jobs are done in front of thousands and broadcast to the world. In no way would these guys be seen as quitters. They would have been seen as GT alums/former players who care about the program and could articulate that the turd was in over his head. I have very little respect for men who stay silent while something they claim to love gets destroyed. That is what they all did and they took the paychecks to stay silent. And Key still hasn’t come out and said anything about the previous guy. Collins took more shots at Johnson who actually won games yet Key hasn’t said a word about Collins. To me if Key wants the job he needs to explain what happened the previous 4 years and what his role was and how he challenged the turd.

Could give him a four year contract with a very low buyout. Not only does that let us see if he's a good coach but it also lets the new AD get finances in order before trying to compete with other schools for an established HC.

Definitely would not give Key anything other than a very team friendly, "prove it" contract. He has no leverage in this situation.
Any contract Key gets would have to be this way. His alternative is getting 500k as an assistant coach from some SEC school, so having a chance to earn $1.5-2 million a year as long as he performs without future guarantees has to be a good opportunity (possibly leading to multiples of that if he succeeds).

Brent Key and Deion = "every coach"

JBatt won't return my calls. Still looking for coffee I guess.
Oh I see. You’re one of those option cultists who wants Monken or Chadwell. No thanks. Don’t need your opinion, you can shut up now.

I still say the right time to make a clear and definitive call on Key is after the last game. Hire him after every win and fire him after every loss is unhelpful. When he has finished eight games in interim you will have 2/3 of a season as a body of work. How did he do? How did the team play? What do you observe about him as a leader? What feedback comes from players and assistants? You will see how he relates to media and if he has energized the fan base. You will have had ample time to talk with him about his vision forward.

Have your “not Key first choice” firmly in mind and ready to go if Key is not the choice and make your decision about Key after Georgia week. The only exception would be if you know who you want, but they are involved with another school, and you need to announce now or you lose them.

I’m not starting Pyron for uga game. That would burn his redshirt and whoever plays is gonna be sacked more than this Tennessee quarterback. I’d give that work to Gibson.
Uga will break Gibson in two. Then what do we do?

All the best to Key. He’s done a good job with the mess that clown left him. But he just will not have the necessary enthusiasm to get the recruits here. We need a proven winner that recruits can trust when he tells them he can get them NIL deals and get them to the nfl. Freeze, Deion or BOB.

or

we need to scrap the notion that we can ever competitively recruit and hire Monken or Chadwell.

We just have completely different opinions on this matter. I would have had very little respect for any coach who publicly undermined the head coach after season 2.

And I would have absolutely zero respect for Key if he used his interim coach pulpit to take shots at Collins. When Collins took shots at CPJ it was a completely bush league move, and it would be even moreso for Key to do it to Collins now.

It is a tough call on Coach Key, it is almost like we should give him a 1 year contract and then decide. We could be and i dont know passing on a very good football coach
I think we give him 3 years but set the bar at 7 wins a year.

if he gets 21 Wins in 3 years, he gets a Hewitt contract because it feels good and he is the right Tech guy and cheap.

I hear you. But here’s the thing - Key is wanting to be the head coach. Hence, I believe it is important that he explain himself regarding the Collins era. I agree Collins bashing Johnson was just bush league but looking back we realize it was just a guy so far in over his head that he did it to mask his lack of confidence. I can understand that now knowing Collins was ignorant as to what his job actually was.

What I can’t understand or would like it to be explained what steps did Key take over the past 4 years to make his alma mater and now possible future employer better? I understand that I don’t need to know but the AD sure needs to know what was going on and what was Key’s role. He had the title Assistant Head Coach, right?

There are only 2 real options - 1) he didn’t want to blemish his career and needed the paycheck so he just went along with Collins to keep his job even though he knew Collins was a joke, or 2) he actually believed Collins was on the right track. That’s all I want to know. But to me, whether it’s #1 or #2 he shouldn’t be considered for the job because neither option is acceptable. If it were 1 season I get it. But it was 4 seasons of the worst football in GT history and Key just quietly went along for the ride down the toilet.

Yeah, I think that last part is the key. I agree that he needs to outline exactly what Collins was doing wrong, what his role is and why he couldn't correct it, etc. But all that needs to be done in private to the AD. There is zero reason for him to take public shots at the former HC like Collins did.

I don't think Key has a moral duty to quit because Collins sucked. It's not a sin to stay in your job because you want the money even though you don't have full confidence in your boss.

It sucks, but sometimes that's what a job is. And in the end, no matter how much he loves Tech, it's still a job and he still needs to provide for his family, so he's not going to sacrifice that job on the off chance that the AD will decide to fire Collins because of it. That will be true of any coach we hire, too -- incredibly rare to see someone voluntarily give up a paycheck.
