Expansion Rumors…

Clemson adds very little to the sec unless they could boot SC. FSU would probably be a maybe. They have a large fanbase in a big state. But the sec already has a presence there.

UNC and uva would add new territory (or VT).

Honestly, I’m waiting for a conference to boot someone. The sec could easily lose Vandy and MSU and increase the payout per school.
Vandy’s their only private school, though. Wouldn’t that open up the conference office to FOIA requests

The acc is behind in cash, but if they booted 4 schools and went to a 10 game schedule they could probably keep the same contract.

You diss Vandy & MSU but I wish we played their schedule and had the Dogs attendance.

more COWBELL please.

Could we go back in a time machine and nix us leaving the SEC? when was that 1980? As much as I hate UGAY, I think the SEC is the girl at prom we all wanted to go home with. Period.

Also does anyone recall what other SEC schools voted us down when we tried to get back in other than UGAY? Was it Ole Miss?

Wishing we had their schedule or attendance has nothing to do with my statement. And it isn’t a dis, just a fact. If the sec reconfigured without Vandy and/or MSU, their per school revenue would increase.

The interest may go down and viewership may go down, but not enough to offset the increased payout to the remaining schools.

No TN or MS cable operator would repackage the sec network. That may not be true if SC, KY, or MO switched conferences.

Neither Vandy or MSU match the success that Auburn occasionally achieves. They are just less successful teams than their in state sec compatriots.

I think the SEC is still trying to stay regional… would not be surprised to see them pick up FSU, Clemson, UNC, and/or Virginia. UNC and Virginia could easily go to with the BIG, too.

Regional concept went out with the addition of tamu and mizzou;it was even a stretch with LSU and ARK. I agree they may/will try to poach the schools mentioned.

I think all these conferences are just trying to do what’s best for the athletes. Y’all act like this is all about money.

You may want to look into why Dodd left the SEC and went the independent route. It was for the players.

I think Tech announced it was leaving the SEC around in 1964 but may have played a few more seasons as an SEC team. We realized we had made a mistake after a few years. Dodd got Bear Bryant to sponsor Tech's bid to rejoin the SEC in the 1970s. We could lose three votes. We knew Georgia, Ole Miss, and Miss State would vote against us, but the others said they would vote for us. But, Auburn changed its mind and voted against us. Then, we were lucky to get invited to join the ACC, which was a fine eight team league comprised of Md, Va, NC, Duke, WF, NCS, Clemson and Tech. Some Tech fans have always had a hard time admitting Coach Dodd made an awful, ego driven decision to get out of the SEC. I don't know why they have a problem admitting what Dodd himself recognized and tried to correct. It was probably the dumbest and costliest mistake ever made by any team in the history of sports. Unfortunately, Tech also made the second worst decision, which was to not join the Big Ten when we had the chance. I think the ACC is weak and doomed as far as being a top tier conference. I think the SEC and Big Ten are on a level of their own, the Big 12 is solidly in third place with surprising momentum, and the the ACC and PAC 12 are in imminent danger. I hope Tech will get invited to join one of the three viable conferences when the ACC collapses, which could be pretty soon. The ACC is just pathetic and helpless.

Of the teams that are pushing for unequal revenue sharing, I do think they don’t expect to get it and are angling for a legal exit from the conference. Unlike most of y’all though I don’t hold it against them. Clemson and FSU and now Miami are pouring tons of money into their football programs to try and be successful. Football is what brings in the money to the conference. It’s unfortunate that the ACC is still full of programs who haven’t quite figured out that a commitment to football is priority #1 to program survival at this point in time. Why does BC get an equal cut if the pie when they’re not equally committed to the sport, especially if it’s coming at the expense of how good the football schools could be as they fall behind their regional peers? That’s the question being asked and it’s breeding resentment on both sides of this.

I’m not saying the ACC should give into unequal revenue sharing, but I do think most of the league is asleep at the wheel on this and it’s in the best interest of the football schools to break off and join a football-first conference, whether that’s the B1G or SEC. I’m hopeful that Angel gets it and is doing what has to be done behind the scenes, with the firing of TStan, GC, and now JP as the off-the-record commitment to righting the ship to build up our resume for joining another conference. I could see the B1G reaching out and saying “look we still want you, but you need to get your öööö together”.

Correct. The ACC will be dead within 10 years. The conference is widely poked fun at and criticized, not only by fans of teams from other conferences, but by fans of teams in The ACC.

Some very good points. When the ACC expanded with Miami and VT, a lot of people thought it could become a peer of the SEC in football. But as always, the “leadership” of the Tobacco Road Conference sat on it’s hands and, as always, paid homage to the Carolina basketball schools.
The SEC, on the other hand, capitalized on it’s strengths and became proactive. The BIG10 did as well. The ACC, due to it’s own allegiances and ineptitude is now locked into a box it cannot get out of.
Make no mistake about it, the “football” schools in the league are doing more than complaining and saber rattling. They realize maintaining the status quo will end their chances of being dominant in football again, and subsequently beat their revenue streams into the dirt. I hope Tech is paying attention.
I do think the new AD gets this also.

I simultaneously hate FSU, Clemson and the others who want to get unequal distribution and, at the same time, I want Tech to get more than it's getting. I would love to turn this on one day and see Tech had been invited to the SEC or Big 10. I would even feel better if Tech got in the Big 12. The ACC is just a weak conglomeration of basketball schools trying to exist in a football world. It world even be better if the ACC disbanded and 11 of the best football schools in a somewhat regional conference that plays 10 conference games a year.

1- Tech

2- Clemson

3- FSU

4- Miami

5- NC

6- Duke

7- Wake

8- NC State

9- Va

10- Va Tech

11- Louisville

I know this is not going to happen. But, I think this would be much better than the current ACC. These three and four time zone coast to coast conferences are crazy, and the TV money is drying up. Somebody needs to stand up for sanity in college sports. In the real world, I don't know what will happen. But, I don't think the status quo will survive much longer.

Not sure how that would have any more appeal than the current ACC?

Big 12 sucks, no thanks.

The only school complaining that gives me heart burn is UNC. They’re one of the biggest reasons the conference never lived up to its potential, in terms of payouts they should be happy to get whatever they get.

As for theoretical rebuilding of the conference, you’ve got the wrong teams in there. You definitely want:
GT, FSU, UM, Clemson, VPI, NCSt, UNC, and UVA.
That’s a solid 8. Bring in WVU for 9. Round robin, plenty of annual rivalries and a more compelling schedule for every single program in the conference. Every program still has room for 4 OOC matchups and a good chance to go bowling even if they’re at the bottom of the conference, so long as they stay committed to strong football.
