The Geoff Collins Effect!

Very funny how everything that happens with GT football under Collins is his responsibility (as it should be). But Johnson's horrid recruiting is someone else's fault. LOL.
Yep, sort of like under CPJ when we flipped a recruit, the detractors moaned about his offer sheet, "great we stole a recruit from Richmond or East Carolina, etc." but the same crowd now is giddy when we get a transfer from Old Dominion, Southern Colorado, etc.

Would you disagree with the statement that Collins has been given significantly more resources for recruiting than Johnson received?

Johnson was no recruiting ace, but he also wasn't getting much help there either.

Well let's see, when the team's record went up by 2 wins each of his first 2 seasons, you would think that would be the coaching. But at least in year 3, we made a bowl game. After Collins took over Temple, the wins couldn't even touch the two years previous. And now they don't even have a winning record. We keep Collins on this trajectory, we will be an FCS team with a 6 win record by the end of his career.
Woah, Nellie. Hold on a minute there. You want to give Johnson credit for better coaching and disregard the fact that he had something like 12 future NFL players on the team but Collins has to take the blame for bad coaching (fair, IMO) when he inherited a team that had only 1 NFL player who was going to get drafted on that team?

Look, Johnson was a hell of a coach. But to disregard the absolute shambles he left the program in from a talent perspective is disingenuous at the very least.

Hypocrite much?

I remember Johnson saying WTTE that "Players pick the school" and alluding to the fact that there was little that could be done at Tech because it was difficult to get players in and keep them eligible.

At the very least, Collins has proven that to be a load of bunk.

Same applies with the Temple argument.

Folks talk like Temple is a factory and can replenish multiple NFL caliber players.

Rhule had a QB, who has NFL starts, and multiple top 100 guys drafted

Tell me what GT record looked like having multiple guys drafted after 2009 & 2014 season?

Wow, I like the cutoff of the rest of the reply. I was talking about how in 3 years that Collins has screwed both programs.
Does cutting off the part you added with it takes three years mean you didn't say it takes three years?

Good lord you're terrible at seeing comparisons.
He didn't even coach three years at Temple, and the two he did you credit to Rhule...so what comparisons are you talking about?

Interesting you're adding UDFA's on PJ's team. 2019 we had 11 NFL players on that team. Where did we end?

He coached 2, and the program backslid after the 3rd... Idk, maybe I'm the only one who can follow along here.

Wait, what?
You're seriously not making the argument that Johnson left a team with 10 NFL players on it for Collins, right?

Johnson inherited a team with Michael Johnson, Derrick Morgan, Morgan Burnett, Demaryius Thomas, Vance Walker, Andrew Gardner, Jonathan Dwyer, all of whom were drafted and 2 of those were first rounders. The rest were UDFAs but some played multiple years in the pros.

Now who did Collins inherit that was anywhere even in the class of those I listed? Go ahead. I'll wait. LOL.

I would agree Collins has made it more of a focus, by making actual coaching much less of a focus.

A boss should see his employee's weaknesses and work to support and strengthen those areas. Clearly Geoff's weakness is coaching, hence the replacement of a large portion of his staff to help strengthen that area. Johnson was a weak recruiter, but his boss (primarily Bobinski) wanted to fire him so he gave him nothing.

Let’s take the injury riddled years instead of the next year after that where we were 8-5 and 9-4. The fact of the matter is nobody that was qualified to coach a P5 team would have taken the talent we had and only won 9 games. A moderately talented coach would have won us 15, an average coach would have yielded 19-21. What we got is historically bad and we all know historically is not an exaggeration. He’s smashing 100+ year old records in spectacular fashion at that and setting news ones like records of futility that had not even been imagined before.

Justin Thomas, Zach Laskey, Shaq Mason all say hello to you sir!

LOL. @ibeeballin already responded appropriately.
Dude, Johnson had TWO first rounders he inherited plus Morgan Burnett and Michael Johnson who were both taken in the 3rd round.

Now, exactly where did Justin Thomas play in the NFL? Who drafted him? How many years?

Shaq Mason is an excellent example of Paul Johnson bringing in a guy who was undervalued and coached him up. Hell, I'll admit that I was complaining when we took him that I thought he should have been a defensive lineman after the all star game performance he had in South Carolina after his senior year.

Laskey was a good college player. He played 2 years in the pros but IIRC, he never had a single carry in the NFL. His accomplishment I prize the most was making Todd Gurley have to wear a GT jersey.

But I wouldn't exactly call those 3 players over an 11 year period proof positive that Johnson was recruiting high level talent, LOL.

As @daBuzz said “There is always an excuse” as @OmnipoTech said “Maybe he should’ve planned for those injuries”

Name the coach who would take over a squad and have us sitting 15-19 with:

With no QBs
Undersized and low depth @ OL
An OL who had to learn how to to be comfortable 2 point and learning the basics of pass blocking
OL who had to learn new footwork
Undersized & low depth @ DL & LB
A defenders who didn’t get pressure or created turnovers

Yeah. It went through more coaching changes after two years than we have in 20. The entire makeup of the program was Frankenstein's monster. Isn't "muh coaching" your entire argument? Shouldn't you consider churning through coaching staffs a problem?

This has been answered numerous times, Jeff Monken. We had 3 perfectly good option qbs and a whole team set up for *gasp* running the option. The OL would have had to learn nothing new.

That didnt transfer to another school while at Tech because of bad coaching
Is that the best you can come up with? LOL.
"Well nobody transferred out under Johnson like they are now".

Have you frigging looked at the college football landscape these days? EVERY school is having to deal with transfers at an unprecedented rate. There's this thing called the "transfer portal" that came into place at the end of 2018. Which, if you bother to check, was when Johnson had just left Georgia Tech. He didn't have to deal with it.

You're comparing apples and refrigerators.
