For those who think a new coach is the answer...

Auburn is sitting at 4-3, and looking to drop 3 more games this year (TAM, UGA, Bama). They could easily finish this season at 6-6.

I kinda assumed that folks responding to this wouldn't see Auburn as a success story, because I certainly don't. I see them as very similar to us. Some really great seasons, and some really ööööty ones.

Auburn bears no resemblance to us except that they too lose to the mutts. And hell, they lost to the mythical National Champs last year, which we almost certainly would have too.

Their disappointing seasons are when they don't make the CFP. Ours are when we don't get a bowl invite.

The game has passed him by, and GT is running an offense that's 20-30 years outdated. Recruiting and attendance will continue to be huge problems if GT doesn't change systems. Gonna have to rip off the bandaid and rejoin the modern era at some point.

I'm not making that as an argument for why we should keep him. I'm just saying that if that is the reality, which many believe it is, then the likelihood of us getting a A+ coach is slim.

While I do think we should give PJ another year, it isn't because of the pain we will experience when he does eventually leave.

Here's their past 5 regular season records, working backwards:

2018 - 4-3
2017 - 10-3
2016 - 8-4
2015 - 6-6
2014 - 8-4

Looks like all of those seasons they didn't make the CFP.

Timing is everything when it comes to the coaching carousel. Last year, GT would've been buried in the pecking order with far more attractive jobs opening (Texas A&M, FSU, Oregon, Tennessee, Florida, and so on). This year, barring some unforeseen firings, there is a good chance GT could be the best job available. And that's not a view held only by a biased GT fan like me.

I agree this is a legitimate part of the analysis as well. But, as for me, and I appear to be in the minority, I’m not ready to give up on PJ yet.

The other point is, on most occasions, I would bet the new coach isn’t walking into a stellar situation. After all, the prior coach has usually been run out of town because he’s messed up. It’s just a matter of how much of a crappy situation someone is willing to take on.

I fully understand that it's been worse . My father and grandfather (both tech grads) remind me all the time . What I'm saying is that we've been significantly better for long enough to prove that the success wantwa some lucky blip on the radar .

You people that act like this nonsense should be acceptable because we sucked 20+ years ago are pathetic .

Well said. I really do like CPJ. Loved the 2014 and 2009 teams. I give him tons of credit for that. Fun times for sure.

Not sure what you are calling a success? If being right at .500 or slightly better is a success then you are correct, we haven't had 2 of 3 below .500. If you look at our record since pretty much forever, we are pretty much the same as we have always been. Gailey was just above .500 every year but that was pretty much it. O'Leary had a nice run in the late 90's to end a streak of 4 of 5 losing seasons. Johnson has a few losing seasons and a few pretty good years.

I have no problem letting Johnson go but it's not realistic to expect things to drastically change with just a new coach.

Those are all fair points. It's worth pointing out that it's about to be 3 of 4 below .500, and I wasn't calling for him to fired last year. I was willing to give him another year. He's had some great years that I haven't forgotten. I was willing to wait it out see some progress, but it isn't there.

My expectations aren't outrageous, but I expect them to be met with little wiggle room for failure. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect our bad seasons to be 7-5/6-6 with the semi-regular 8 or 9 win season and the occasional 10+ win season. From a record standpoint, I think Gailey did just fine.
